Washington, Sept. 29 (SANA) U.S. bans on imports of certain Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motor vehicle products took effect Tuesday, marking the latest measures in an ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.
The restrictions took effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Sept. 29 under three proclamations signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Sept. 8. They apply to specified Canadian products that had previously been subject to additional 50% duties.
The measures cover certain Canadian alcoholic beverages and dairy products, along with specified motor vehicle products. Reports on the measures identified motorcycles with engine capacities exceeding 800 cc among the affected products.
The White House said the measures were imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. The administration maintains that Canadian policies affecting U.S. alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motor vehicles discriminate against U.S. commerce, an assessment disputed by Canada.
Trump said Monday that Canadians had treated the United States “very unfairly.”
The measures follow a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in February that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize the president to impose tariffs. The subsequent measures against Canadian goods rely on Section 338 of the Tariff Act rather than IEEPA.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade negotiations with the United States on Aug. 21 and directed Canadian negotiators to return to Ottawa, saying last-minute changes to the U.S. proposal were unfair and economically unviable.
In remarks the following day, Carney said Canada would respond to new U.S. tariffs with counter-tariffs and reiterated that his government would not accept the proposed terms.
