Damascus, July 12 (SANA) Members of Syria’s People’s Assembly began arriving at the assembly headquarters in Damascus on Sunday for the inaugural session of the newly formed legislature.
The session follows President Ahmad al-Sharaa‘s issuance of Decree No. 143 of 2026 appointing the members of the new People’s Assembly, including the additional one-third appointed by the president.
During the opening session, members are scheduled to take the constitutional oath and elect a speaker, two deputy speakers and a secretary by secret ballot and majority vote. Pending the election of the assembly’s leadership, the session will be chaired by the assembly’s oldest member.
The assembly is required to adopt its rules of procedure within one month of its first sitting.
President Ahmad al-Sharaa issued Decree No. 143 on July 1 appointing the members of the new People’s Assembly, including the constitutionally designated additional one-third of members.
