Damascus, May 2 (SANA)    Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa said Syria has expanded engagement with international media and strengthened its global presence, as he reviewed the work of the Ministry’s External Media Department over the past year.

Speaking after a meeting with department staff on Saturday, al-Mustafa said that more than 5,000 foreign journalists had entered Syria since liberation, following measures to facilitate access in coordination with relevant authorities. He added that the ministry adopted a policy of openness with journalists and researchers, contributing to improved international coverage of the country.

The minister highlighted outreach to Syrians abroad through the “Sahm” program and efforts to expand academic and research engagement, alongside training programs for English-speaking university students to enhance Syria’s media presence.

He said a new office had been established to follow the affairs of Syrians abroad from a media perspective, while preparations are underway to launch a “national branding” project aimed at improving Syria’s international image.

Al-Mustafa described the past year as a foundational phase, with plans to further strengthen international outreach and implement practical steps to achieve measurable results. Syria has recently improved its ranking in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, rising 36 places to 141 globally.
