Amman, April 19 (SANA) Syrian and Jordanian officials held a meeting in Amman on Sunday to discuss a project aimed at updating the reference hydro-political study of the Yarmouk River Basin, with the participation of international partners and water sector experts and support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
Deputy Minister of Energy for Water Resources Affairs Osama Abu Zeid said the project would enhance data exchange, establish a joint working methodology, and build a comprehensive understanding of the current and future status of the basin amid environmental and climate challenges.
He stressed that the initiative would contribute to improving water management and serve the shared interests of both countries.

For his part, Secretary-General of the Jordan Valley Authority Hisham Haisa highlighted the importance of the project’s timing, describing it as a starting point for vital initiatives in managing shared water resources.
He noted that the Yarmouk Basin represents a key model for Syrian-Jordanian cooperation, adding that joint management has become a strategic necessity to ensure fair and sustainable use of water resources amid rising demand and climate change pressures.
Haisa added that the study would provide a strategic tool for decision-makers and support integrated water resource management, contributing to the development of sustainable solutions in this vital sector.
The meeting follows discussions held during the Syrian-Jordanian Higher Coordination Council on April 12 in Amman, which addressed cooperation in the water sector, including mechanisms to sustain water flow in the Yarmouk Basin.
