Hasakah, March 25 (SANA) Flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Hasakah province, northeast Syria, has displaced hundreds of families as emergency teams continue rescue operations for a second day, Emergency and Disaster Management Minister Raed al-Saleh said late Tuesday.
In a statement posted on the platform X, al-Saleh said Civil Defense teams were responding to widespread flooding in rural areas, including Tal Hamis and al-Yaarubiyah, where rising waters trapped residents in their homes and submerged key roads.
He said emergency crews were working on multiple fronts to contain the impact, including building earthen barriers, opening drainage channels and clearing blocked culverts.
More than 120 families have been evacuated from affected homes and relocated to safer areas, he said, adding that additional teams are being deployed to expand operations in the city of Hasakah as severe weather persists.
Al-Saleh said the ministry is coordinating with the United Nations and other international organizations to provide humanitarian assistance to affected residents, aiming to prevent further deterioration of conditions.
Earlier Tuesday, Youssef Azzo, head of field operations at the ministry, said more than 400 homes in the Tal Hamis area in northeastern Hasakah had been completely flooded, prompting large-scale intervention by Civil Defense units.
Syria has experienced two consecutive weather systems in recent days, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that led to flash floods, water accumulation and rising water levels in roads, homes and camps, as well as partial collapses and traffic accidents linked to slippery conditions.
