Damascus, Sept. 6 (SANA) Executive preparations have commenced for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Nasib–Damascus international highway, following the arrival of the first batch of engineering equipment at the site.
The project was awarded to Kuwait’s Combined Group Contracting Company (CGC) for approximately $46.8 million, with a 400-day execution period following a tender by the General Authority for Road Transport under the Ministry of Transport.
Moaz Najjar, General Director of the General Authority for Road Transport, told SANA on Sunday that technical studies were completed over the past four months prior to tendering.
The project covers a 100-kilometer four-lane stretch, involving asphalt milling, laying new pavement, treating damaged sections, median cleaning, road marking, safety signage, and lighting infrastructure. The contractor has begun mobilizing equipment, including pavers, planers, rollers, and water tankers, while coordinating execution schedules to maintain traffic flow.
Najjar emphasized the strategic priority of the route, which forms part of a major transport corridor exceeding 400 kilometers connecting the Jordanian border to the Turkish border via Damascus, Homs, and Aleppo.
The corporation is finalizing procedures to retain an international consulting firm to oversee quality control and schedule compliance. In April, CGC conducted 3D laser scanning and high-definition camera surveys of the highway to map structural defects.
Additionally, Najjar noted that procedures for rehabilitating the Damascus–Palmyra–Deir Ezzor corridor are advancing under contracts with Saudi Arabia’s al-Rawaf and Syria’s al-Kawati companies.
