Homs, March 24 (SANA) The old neighborhoods of Homs continue to reflect a strong model of social cohesion, where long-standing values of neighborly solidarity and coexistence have endured despite years of conflict.

In the historic district of al-Hamidiya, residents recount the story of Mowaffaq al-Najjar, also known as “Abu Ma’an,” who has become a symbol of loyalty and trust. During the displacement of Christian families due to heavy shelling by the deposed regime, more than 120 families entrusted him with the keys to their homes.

Al-Najjar safeguarded the properties, arranged the shipment of belongings to their owners, and protected the houses from looting — actions rooted in the values shaped by his upbringing on the predominantly Christian al-Ma’moun Street.

Having previously moved to the al-Qusour neighborhood, al-Najjar later returned to al-Hamidiya and resettled there. He eventually fled to Idlib amid intensified violence. Upon returning to Homs, he found that his home in al-Qusour had been destroyed. In a gesture of gratitude, his neighbors in al-Hamidiya found him a new home.

Father Youhanna Youssef, the priest at the Sayyidat Umm al-Nour Church in Old Homs, emphasized that residents, both Muslim and Christian, have long shared social and religious occasions, and that hardship has only strengthened their bonds.
He noted that Muslim neighbors had protected Christian homes in their absence and had warmly welcomed them back after their return. He described Abu Ma’an’s story as a powerful example of mutual loyalty.

Many residents highlighted the community’s rejection of sectarianism and its cooperative spirit, recalling how Abu Ma’an’s children took part in lighting candles during religious events and how he himself helped protect such gatherings and assisted residents during the siege.

These deeply rooted human connections have proven stronger than the hardships faced by the people of Homs. The enduring values of trust, loyalty, and neighborliness remain the true safeguard of the community, symbolized by a simple yet powerful token: the key.
