Damascus, Mar.5 (SANA) The Syrian Arab Army has reinforced its presence along the borders with Lebanon and Iraq, as part of defensive measures aimed at safeguarding the border and preventing potential security repercussions amid the escalating regional war and heightened tensions across multiple fronts.
At this stage, Syria’s borders with neighboring countries have effectively become the primary defensive line, making tighter control an urgent priority in light of attempts at infiltration, smuggling activities, and efforts to exploit security gaps.
The Operations Authority of the Syrian Arab Army disclosed on Wednesday the expansion of troop deployment along the borders with the two countries. The move involves Border Guard units and reconnaissance battalions, deployed in a coordinated field operation focusing on monitoring border activities, combating smuggling networks, and preventing any illegal activity.
Military sources stated that the step is purely defensive and sovereign in nature, aimed at strengthening internal security and consolidating stability along the border strip. They noted that Damascus is not planning any military action against neighboring countries, but remains prepared to respond to any security threat targeting the country.
Tightening Border Control to Ensure Stability
The new deployment is expected to consolidate the enforcement of law in border areas that have witnessed activities by smuggling networks and organized crime groups. It also contributes to enhancing stability in border villages and towns, improving the security of residents and extending its positive impact to neighboring areas in Lebanon and Iraq.
Reliance on continuous reconnaissance and surveillance operations provides early detection capabilities to detect suspicious activities before they evolve into actual threats.
Despite reports about the deployment of short-range rocket launchers, Syrian officials maintain that the military presence remains defensive and does not signal escalation, stressing that Syrian borders are zones of stability rather than platforms for confrontation.
Coordination with Lebanon and Security Cooperation with Iraq
The Syrian military deployment along the Lebanese border coincides with a parallel political track.
President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon recently said relations between the two countries are positive and that security and military coordination continues through joint committees addressing border issues, detainee files and border demarcation.
On the eastern front, a phone call between Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani underscored the importance of joint security cooperation, border control and counter-terrorism efforts.
The call came as the regional war involving the United States, Israel and Iran erupted.
The Syrian president had earlier received Iraqi National Intelligence Service chief Hamid al-Shatri several times, where both sides reviewed regional developments, particularly the security situation, while stressing that Syria’s stability remains a key pillar of regional security.
Strategic Priority
During a highly sensitive period marked by an open regional conflict, states are acting according to their sovereign priorities.
Through the repositioning of its forces along its borders, Syria is reaffirming that protecting sovereignty is a top national priority and that the Syrian army remains the strategic line of defense safeguarding the homeland.
Officials stress that Syria’s borders are areas of stability — not corridors for chaos or escalation.
