London, April 18 (SANA) The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Saturday two separate maritime incidents near the Omani coast, amid increasing security alerts following Iran’s renewed closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement on its official website, the authority said a container ship was struck by an unidentified projectile about 25 nautical miles northeast of Oman, causing damage to several containers without triggering a fire.
The second incident involved reports of a foreign object falling into the water near a cruise ship about 3 nautical miles east of Oman, with no damage or injuries reported.
The authority renewed its call for vessels transiting the area to exercise heightened caution and to report any suspicious activity or incidents immediately.
Earlier on Saturday, the authority said two boats belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps opened fire on a tanker and another vessel in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in the vital waterway.
Iran announced on Saturday the renewed closure of the strait, stating that control over it has returned to its previous status under strict supervision by Iranian armed forces, and that most vessels pass through its territorial waters and are required to pay transit fees.
