Justice Minister, UN Deputy Envoy discuss judicial development efforts

Damascus, Feb. 22 (SANA) Syria’s Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais met Sunday with Deputy Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria Claudio Cordone to explore cooperation on strengthening the country’s judicial infrastructure and supporting the independence of the judiciary.

al-Wais stated the ministry is pushing ahead with efforts to reinforce an independent judicial system and has abolished all exceptional courts. He also outlined plans to rehabilitate damaged court buildings and improve working conditions for judges.

Cordone voiced the UN’s readiness to provide technical and legal support, particularly in infrastructure rehabilitation and capacity building.

The talks are part of ongoing cooperation between Damascus and the United Nations as Syria seeks to reform its judicial system.
