Florida, Feb. 13 (SANA) The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Friday it has completed the transfer of ISIS prisoners from northeastern Syria to Iraq, following a final night airlift.
CENTCOM said the mission, launched on January 21, lasted 23 days and moved more than 5,700 adult ISIS members into Iraqi custody. The operation was planned and executed by US forces and coalition partners within the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF‑OIR).
Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM Commander, praised the “professionalism and cooperation” of the joint force and Iraq’s leadership, stressing the importance of the transfer for regional security. Major General Kevin Lambert, CJTF‑OIR Commander, said the successful operation will help prevent ISIS from reemerging in Syria.
CJTF‑OIR, established in 2014, continues to support partner forces in combating ISIS, which was territorially defeated in 2019.
