Damascus, Feb. 8 (SANA) – The Syrian labor movement has undergone a qualitative transformation since liberation, rebuilding the structure of the General Federation of Workers’ Unions on new professional foundations and restoring its presence both regionally and internationally.
In an interview with SANA, Federation President Fawaz al-Ahmad said the 28th General Conference, held last November, marked the first of its kind in terms of official attendance and the participation of the International Labor Organization as an observer, strengthening workers’ confidence in democratic election mechanisms.
Al-Ahmad noted that post-liberation union work has greater freedom, with a direct focus on wages, health, and workers’ rights. He outlined efforts to rehabilitate key labor health facilities, reopen services, and expand health coverage, as well as programs to regularize temporary workers’ rights and develop vocational training in cooperation with government and labor organizations.
He added that the federation has resumed Syria’s seat in the Arab Labor Organization, participated in the International Labor Conference in Geneva, and strengthened ties with Arab and international unions, reinforcing labor solidarity with Syria.
