Beirut, Feb. 6 (SANA) Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais said the agreement signed in Lebanon on Friday to transfer convicted Syrian prisoners from Lebanon to Syria marks the culmination of intensive diplomatic and judicial efforts and reflects the maturity of bilateral relations between the two countries.
In a statement to SANA, al-Wais said the agreement comes in implementation of direct directives by President Ahmad al-Sharaa to follow up on the conditions of Syrian citizens abroad. He noted that the agreement was prepared through joint judicial and technical committees that worked with a high level of professionalism and transparency, praising the Lebanese judiciary for its role in expediting complex cases.
Al-Wais stressed that the agreement constitutes an initial and essential step toward addressing the situation of Syrian convicts who have spent long periods in Lebanese prisons, many of whom face legally complex cases.
He added that joint committees will continue their work to study the files of other Syrian detainees, safeguard their legal rights, and pave the way for a broader, comprehensive agreement in the future.
Earlier on Friday, Syria and Lebanon signed an agreement in Beirut providing for the transfer of Syrian convicts from Lebanon to Syria.
