Aleppo, Feb.02 (SANA) -Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Ghareeb on Sunday discussed with a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ways to support the return of displaced residents and promote recovery in affected areas across the governorate.
The meeting, held at the governorate headquarters and attended by a UNHCR delegation headed by Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, addressed the displacement situation in Aleppo and mechanisms to strengthen joint coordination to facilitate the safe and orderly return of residents, secure livelihoods and advance a sustainable approach that meets humanitarian and service needs.
Al-Ghareeb stressed the priority of caring for residents of displacement camps during the current phase and working to create the necessary conditions for safe, organized returns. He noted that the experiences of the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods represented a positive model in this regard.
The discussions also covered the situation of camps and a plan to address them within a defined timeframe extending to the end of 2026, as well as challenges hindering returns, particularly the presence of landmines in some areas.
In a post on X platform, Vargas Llosa said the delegation visited the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo, describing the return of many recently displaced families to their homes as a step that reflects confidence in the future.
He called for increased investment to support sustainable recovery for families in the two neighborhoods and expressed appreciation for the Aleppo governor’s support for initiatives aimed at strengthening solidarity among Syrians.
Despite positive indicators, Vargas Llosa said living conditions remain difficult, underscoring the need to intensify investments to improve basic services and support long-term recovery for families.
Earlier in January, residents of the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods returned to their homes in a safe and organized manner after the completion of necessary procedures and the securing of the areas by the Internal Security Forces and the Aleppo Governorate.
