The International Commission of Inquiry praises Syria’s steps in transitional justice

New York, Dec. 8(SANA) The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria congratulated the Syrian people on the many steps taken to address crimes, violations, and abuses committed over past decades, including the establishment of national bodies dedicated to transitional justice and missing persons.

In its statement on Sunday, the Commission affirmed that the Syrian people deserve to live in peace, with full respect for rights long denied to them, calling on all Syrians and the international community to work together to confront challenges toward a brighter future.

The Commission reported that it was finally granted access to the country after being denied for a long time, expressing appreciation for the Syrian government’s readiness to engage on human rights issues and its anticipation of continuing support for efforts aimed at ensuring past violations are not repeated.

“Overcoming the horrific legacy of 14 years of war and massive destruction, along with addressing the violence that followed 8 December, will require great strength, support, and patience,” the Commission stated.

Robert Beaty, head of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism for investigating serious crimes in Syria, said: “The fall of the Assad regime opened the way for justice efforts that had long faced obstacles.”

Beaty described the establishment of Syrian national committees for transitional justice and missing persons as “an important and serious development worthy of welcome,” stressing the importance of cooperation with Syrian and international civil society organizations, as well as victims’ and survivors’ associations.
