UNHCR: Overthrow of the Assad regime opened the door to peace and stability in Syria

Damascus, Dec. 8 (SANA) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Monday that the overthrow of the Assad regime last year has helped create conditions for greater stability in Syria and enabled millions of refugees and displaced people to return home.

In a statement posted on its official website, the agency reported that more than 1.2 million Syrians have voluntarily returned from neighboring countries since last December, while over 1.9 million internally displaced people have gone back to their areas of origin.

UNHCR stated that it has begun facilitating voluntary returns by providing cash assistance, transportation, and other forms of support, while emphasizing the urgent need for increased funding to advance Syria’s reconstruction process.

Marking the anniversary, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi wrote: “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help end one of the world’s worst wars.” He added that Syrians are ready to rebuild their country, noting: “The question is whether the world is ready to help them.”
