Syria, UNHCR discuss needs of returnees, means of enhancing stability

Daraa, SANA- Syria and UN discussed Saturday the aspects of cooperation, the needs of returnees and ways of supporting efforts aimed at enhancing stability.

That came during a meeting held at the Governorate headquarters between Daraa Governor, Anwar al-Zoubi, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and the accompanying delegation.

The governor praised the UNHCR role in supporting displaced returning to their homeland, underscoring the governorate’s commitment to ensuring safe conditions for them, in coincides with the government efforts exerted to rehabilitate infrastructure and improve basic services.

He also touched on the challenges facing them, particularly the need for additional support in the sectors of education, healthcare, water, and electricity, as well providing employment opportunities for returnees.

In turn, Grandi stressed UNHCR’s appreciation for efforts exerted by Daraa governorate to meet the needs of returnees, asserting the commitment to continue supporting recovery programs and humanitarian assistance in line with national priorities.

The visit included Social Welfare Center in Daraa province which is affiliated with Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East as well a number of sites witnessing significant return of citizens from abroad.

Supervisor of the center, AbdulRahman Issa, told SANA that Grandi’s visit came on World Refugee Day and aims at briefing the center’s activities and programs in coincides with returning of about 45 individuals in coordination with UNHCR and Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

The delegation comprises Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, UNHCR Representative to Syrian Arab Republic, Deputy Representative and a number of UNHCR staff from Damascus and Daraa.
