Amman, May 31 (SANA) Jordan’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday condemned the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by Israeli settlers, where Israeli flags were raised and nationalist slogans were chanted under police protection, describing the incident as a violation of international law and an unacceptable provocation.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Sufian Qudah said Jordan rejected the continued settler incursions and related measures, saying they undermine the historical and legal status quo at the site and infringe on arrangements governing Islamic and Christian holy places in Jerusalem.
He warned of the consequences of ongoing violations and called on the international community to take a firm stance requiring Israel to halt unilateral measures and actions affecting holy sites in Jerusalem and the occupied Palestinian territories.
Qudah reiterated Jordan’s position that Al-Aqsa Mosque is a Muslim place of worship and that the Jerusalem Awqaf Department, affiliated with Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, is the sole legal authority responsible for administering the site and regulating access.
Earlier on Sunday, groups of Israeli settlers stormed the compound, raised Israeli flags and engaged in what Jordanian officials described as provocative acts amid an increase in settler visits to the site.
