Damascus, July 12 (SANA) Syrian ministers and officials have hailed the inaugural session of the new People’s Assembly as a national milestone in consolidating constitutional institutions and a new era defined by work, reconstruction and partnership in service of the nation and its citizens.
Information Minister: A new era for legislative work
Information Minister Khaled Zaarour said the first session of the new Assembly since liberation represents an important milestone in completing the building of state institutions and restoring legislative work to its role of enacting laws, exercising oversight and discussing issues affecting Syrians’ lives and future.
The ministry will continue to cover the Assembly’s work with clarity and professionalism, making information available to the public and opening space for responsible debate that brings the legislature closer to citizens and strengthens trust in its performance, he said.
“We look forward to a council that makes law, accountability and citizen interest the foundation of its work and contributes to building a modern Syria on the basis of responsibility and institutions,” Zaarour added.
Justice Minister: A new phase for rule of law
Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais said the completion of the Constitutional Court and the launch of the Assembly mark the consolidation of constitutional institutions, heralding a phase in which the rule of law is entrenched on the basis of equal citizenship, the protection of rights, the strengthening of justice, and the continuation of reconstruction and stability.
Finance Minister: Diverse expertise in new Assembly
Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh said the Assembly brings together economic, political, scientific and popular expertise representing various segments of society, and that the ministry looks forward to cooperating with the Assembly to support economic recovery and sustainable development.
A new chapter in Syria’s history
Endowments Minister Mohammed Abu al-Khair Shukri said the Assembly’s first session marks the beginning of a new chapter in Syria’s history, expressing hope it will be a milestone in the new Syria, defined by work, reconstruction and service to the nation.
Communications Minister Abdul Salam Haykal said the Assembly’s launch represents a new era in representing Syrians’ will, stressing that integration between legislative and executive authorities is essential for state development.
Culture Minister Mohammed Yassin Saleh said the first session marks the launch of a new Syrian era, for which the state has laid the groundwork by establishing a participatory approach and responsible dialogue between people’s representatives and the executive.
Damascus Countryside Governor Amer al-Sheikh said the first session since liberation represents a step toward restoring the legislative institution’s true role after years of marginalization.
The People’s Assembly held its first session on Sunday in the presence of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Higher Committee for Assembly Elections Chairman Mohammed al-Ahmad, 206 Assembly members and a number of ministers. Members took the oath of office and elected Abdul Hamid al-Awak as speaker, Mustafa Moussa as first deputy speaker, Madonna Bishara as second deputy speaker, and Mueyed Habib as secretary.
The session follows parliamentary elections held in June 2026, marking a new phase in Syria’s political path following the fall of the deposed regime in December 2024.
