Washington, May 12 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump is considering renewed military action against Iran as negotiations remain deadlocked and tensions continue to rise over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to the report, Trump has grown increasingly frustrated by the continued closure of the strategic shipping route and what he sees as divisions within Iran’s leadership that are preventing significant concessions in nuclear negotiations.
The report said Iran’s latest response to U.S. proposals, which Trump described as “completely unacceptable,” raised growing doubts within the administration over whether Tehran was prepared to engage seriously in diplomacy.
CNN reported that officials within the Trump administration remain divided over the next course of action.
Some officials favor a more aggressive strategy aimed at pressuring Iran back to negotiations, including possible limited military strikes designed to further weaken Tehran’s position. Others are urging the White House to continue pursuing diplomacy.
A regional official cited in the report said several countries in the region, along with Pakistan, were attempting to deliver messages to Tehran indicating that Trump viewed the current moment as Iran’s final opportunity to engage seriously in diplomatic talks.
The official added that Iran did not appear to be responding positively to those messages.
According to the report, U.S. and Iranian officials were approaching negotiations with different expectations and timelines, with Washington seeking faster progress while Tehran appeared prepared for a prolonged standoff after decades of economic pressure.
Trump met with his national security team again at the White House on Monday to discuss available options, CNN reported.
Sources familiar with the talks told the network that no major decision on future steps was expected before Trump departs for China later this week.
Separately, Trump said on Monday that ceasefire efforts between Washington and Tehran were in “critical condition” following continued failure to reach an agreement to end the conflict.
“We will achieve a complete victory,” Trump said during a press conference at the White House, according to Agence France-Presse.
He compared the state of the ceasefire talks to “a patient on life support who is close to dying.”
Trump had earlier said on his Truth Social platform that he “did not like the Iranian response at all,” without clarifying what steps Washington might take next, fueling speculation over possible military escalation or continued pressure on Tehran.
