Damascus, Jan. 9 (SANA) European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated on Friday the European Union’s support for Syria’s unity and its reconstruction efforts.
Upon their arrival in Damascus, Costa said on the social media platform X that after many years of war and suffering, the fall of the Assad regime had offered some hope to the Syrian people. “We are here today to show the EU’s continued support for Syria. There is still a long way ahead, but you have already taken the first steps,” he wrote.
Von der Leyen said: “After decades of fear and silence, Syrians began a long journey toward hope and renewal. Europe will do everything it can to support Syria’s recovery and reconstruction.”
Later in the day, President Ahmad Al-Sharaa met with the EU leaders at the People’s Palace to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between Syria and the European Union, focusing on reconstruction, economic partnerships, and regional stability.
