Washington, May 5 (SANA) The commander of U.S. Central Command said Monday that American forces destroyed six small Iranian boats and intercepted cruise missiles and drones during an operation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Admiral Brad Cooper said the actions were part of a U.S. effort to safeguard maritime navigation through the strategic waterway.
According to Reuters, Cooper warned Iranian forces to keep their distance from U.S. military positions during the operation. He added that a U.S.-imposed blockade preventing ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports remains in place and has produced results “beyond expectations.”
Earlier in the day, U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran would face severe consequences if it targeted American vessels involved in what he described as the “Freedom Project,” an initiative aimed at assisting ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.
