Dhaka, April 27 (SANA) At least 14 people were killed in Bangladesh after lightning strikes hit multiple districts during intense seasonal thunderstorms, officials said.
Most of those killed were farmers working in open fields and laborers caught outdoors, according to local reports confirmed by Reuters. Several others were injured.
Authorities said the sudden storms caused widespread disruption across several regions, with lightning strikes accounting for the fatalities during heavy rainfall.
Bangladesh frequently experiences deadly lightning incidents during the pre-monsoon season. In May 2016, more than 200 people were killed by lightning in a single month, prompting the government to classify lightning as a natural disaster.
Experts say deforestation and changes in land use have increased exposure to lightning risks, particularly among rural populations working in agriculture.
