Washington, April 7 (SANA) Meta said it will shut down its standalone Messenger website on April 16, redirecting users to Facebook’s messaging platform for web access.
The move will affect users who access Messenger through a browser without using Facebook directly. After April 16, visitors to Messenger.com will be automatically redirected to facebook.com/messages.
The Messenger mobile app for iOS and Android will continue to operate as normal, the company said.
Users who currently rely on the web version without a Facebook account will need to log in to Facebook to send and receive messages on desktop.
Meta said users can preserve their chat history by setting up encrypted backups secured with a PIN, allowing conversations to be restored after the transition.
The shutdown follows Meta’s earlier decision to discontinue Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac, as part of efforts to consolidate its messaging services across core platforms.
