Washington, October 3 (SANA) Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser Mike Needham discussed Saturday ways to develop bilateral relations and expand cooperation in political, security, economic and trade fields.
According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the talks addressed the post-coalition mission phase in Iraq and ways to establish a comprehensive framework for Baghdad-Washington relations based on previous understandings.
Hussein stressed the importance of continued cooperation to counter ISIS and prevent its resurgence, while highlighting the government’s plan to place weapons exclusively under state control and encourage armed groups willing to give up their weapons to engage in political activity.
Needham stressed the importance of continued direct communication with Iraq to convey its positions and priorities to US institutions and enhance understanding of its views on bilateral and regional issues.
On September 30, US President Donald Trump announced the end of the US military mission in Iraq and the departure of the remaining US forces.
