Cairo, Sept. 7 (SANA) Arab foreign ministers met in Cairo on Monday for the 166th regular session of the Arab League Ministerial Council to address escalating regional security threats, Iranian military actions, and attacks targeting several Arab nations.
The ministerial meeting, attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani at the Arab League headquarters, also focused on ongoing Israeli military operations across the occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Syria.
Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy called for heightened Arab vigilance and solidarity, stating that the security of Gulf nations remains an integral part of broader Arab national security. He rejected strikes on Arab territories, warned against threats to maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and reaffirmed support for an independent Palestinian state.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized the importance of supporting national state institutions, preserving territorial sovereignty, and rejecting foreign interference or parallel entities. Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf similarly reaffirmed opposition to sovereign violations, reiterating support for Syria and Lebanon against Israeli expansionism.
Diplomats from Tunisia and Mauritania urged peaceful resolution and dialogue to prevent a broader regional conflict. Meanwhile, Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji expressed solidarity with Gulf states and Jordan regarding Iranian attacks, while emphasizing the need to assert state authority and restrict arms to legitimate state institutions.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi affirmed continued diplomatic efforts to protect Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem under historic Hashemite custodianship.
