Cairo, Sept. 06 (SANA) Egypt and Pakistan stressed Sunday the importance of resuming implementation of a Pakistani-brokered memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran and reaching a comprehensive, sustainable agreement that could strengthen regional security and stability and prevent the conflict from widening.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its website Sunday that the issue was discussed during a phone call between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
The ministers discussed regional developments and efforts to contain the escalation and restore calm in the region, according to the statement.
Abdelatty and Dar agreed to maintain close consultations and coordination in the coming period, both bilaterally and through the four-country regional mechanism comprising Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye, in support of joint efforts to strengthen regional security and stability.
Pakistan and Qatar are playing a key mediation role in efforts to end the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which began on Feb. 28.
The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in June through Pakistani mediation addressing several outstanding issues, including maintaining a cessation of military operations and ensuring the security of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, as part of a process aimed at ending the war.
