Cairo, July 19 (SANA) Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy called on Sunday the United States and Iran to take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions and return to negotiations, warning that continued escalation, particularly in the Arabian Gulf, could have serious consequences for regional and global security.
In a statement on X, Fahmy said that further escalation could draw the region into a new cycle of violence that would be difficult to contain, bringing heavy losses for all parties and broad economic repercussions. He urged all sides to exercise wisdom and prioritize dialogue in addressing outstanding issues.
Fahmy stressed that the Iranian attacks targeting several Arab countries are unacceptable and condemned, noting that Arab states have rejected the war from the outset and should not bear the consequences of its continuation or expansion.
He also called for mutual adherence to the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran last June, including respect for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law and refraining from using the waterway as a means of political or economic pressure.
The Arab League’s call reflects growing regional concern over the consequences of continued escalation, particularly its impact on regional security, economic stability, and freedom of navigation.
