Capitals, May 28 (SANA) The United States and Iran exchanged military strikes on Thursday in renewed fighting near the Strait of Hormuz, hours after President Donald Trump denied reports that Washington was close to reaching an agreement with Tehran.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they targeted a U.S. air base in response to American strikes carried out earlier near the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas.
A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that American forces had shot down four Iranian attack drones and struck a ground control center preparing to launch a fifth drone near the strategic waterway.
“The actions were measured and purely defensive, aimed at preserving the ceasefire,” the official said.
The latest exchanges highlighted the fragility of a U.S.-Iran ceasefire that took effect in April and raised renewed concerns over regional stability and global energy supplies.
Kuwait, which hosts a major U.S. military installation, said it was responding to missile and drone attacks without identifying the source of the launches.
Israel said warning sirens sounded in northern Israel over suspected hostile aircraft activity amid continuing cross-border tensions involving the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon.
Trump said on Wednesday that negotiations with Tehran had not yet produced a satisfactory agreement and denied reports aired by Iranian state television claiming Washington and Tehran were close to a deal on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
