New York, May 19 (SANA) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned on Monday the drone attack targeting the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi, describing attacks on civilian nuclear facilities as “totally unacceptable” and a violation of international law.
According to the UN News Centre, Guterres expressed deep concern over reports that the strikes, which occurred Sunday, sparked a fire in an electrical generator inside the perimeter of the nuclear facility.
The UN chief called on all parties to cease hostilities and refrain from launching attacks on or near civilian infrastructure, including nuclear energy facilities, warning that any further escalation could have serious consequences for security and stability across the Middle East.
Several Arab countries and organizations, including the United Arab Emirates, the Arab Parliament, the League of Arab States, Jordan, Egypt and Qatar, condemned the attack on the Barakah plant and reaffirmed their solidarity with the UAE.
