New York, April 23 (SANA) The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating security situation in Sudan’s Darfur region, which continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians.
OCHA said, citing local sources, that a drone strike targeted the town of Um Dukhun, southwest of Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur State, last Tuesday, killing more than 10 civilians and injuring several others.
It added that in North Darfur State, ongoing insecurity forced 115 people to flee their homes in the village of Damrat Al-Qubba in Kutum locality last Sunday. The displaced sought shelter in al-Fasher locality, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
OCHA noted that despite numerous challenges, the United Nations and its partners continue to respond to humanitarian needs across Sudan. It reiterated the need to ensure safe, sustainable and unimpeded humanitarian access.
More than three years after the outbreak of war in Sudan, nearly 34 million people, about two-thirds of the population, now require humanitarian assistance, making it the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
