New York, April 3 (SANA) The UN Security Council on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states. It also highlighted their key role in promoting international peace and security.
Following a special session chaired by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani, the Security Council said in a presidential statement that member states discussed ways to strengthen strategic cooperation with the GCC under the agenda item on UN cooperation with regional organizations to maintain global stability, according to the UN News website.
The statement highlighted the GCC’s contributions in mediation, preventive diplomacy, technical and financial support, and active involvement in UN peacekeeping operations and humanitarian initiatives.
It called for intensified dialogue, improved coordination mechanisms, and information sharing, particularly in counterterrorism, peacebuilding, and humanitarian response, and urged UN Secretary-General António Guterres to provide practical recommendations to enhance cooperation in his next report.
The council also encouraged continued joint efforts to address maritime, food, and water security challenges, stressing the central role of regional organizations under Chapter VIII of the UN Charter in safeguarding international peace and security.
