Tehran, March 9 (SANA) Iran’s Assembly of Experts announced on Sunday the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of the U.S.–Israeli attack on Iran on February 28.
The Assembly of Experts, composed of 88 clerics, is constitutionally responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader.
Since 1979, Iran has had only two Supreme Leaders: Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, followed by Ali Khamenei, who assumed the position in 1989.
U.S. President Donald Trump had warned that any successor chosen without U.S. approval “would not last long.”
The U.S.–Israeli attack resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian political and military figures, creating a significant leadership vacuum within the country.
