Bamako, April 29 (SANA) Mali’s military leader, Assimi Goïta, said Wednesday that the country’s armed forces have regained control of the situation following a series of armed attacks targeting strategic sites in recent days.
According to AFP, Goïta said in a televised address Tuesday evening: “Security measures have been reinforced, and the situation is under control,” adding that “sweeping operations, intelligence gathering and efforts to secure affected areas are ongoing.” He also urged the population not to be drawn into “division.”
Armed attacks carried out by militants allied with Al-Qaeda and Tuareg fighters have intensified across several areas in northern Mali since last Saturday.
According to the Malian government, the attacks resulted in the killing of the defense minister at his residence in Kati on Sunday, while the death toll has risen to 23, including civilians and military personnel.
