Washington, March 3 (SANA) The U.S. Senate is set to vote Wednesday on a bipartisan resolution aimed at restricting the administration’s authority to launch military operations against Iran without congressional approval.
Senators Tim Kaine, Chuck Schumer and Adam Schiff said in a joint statement Tuesday that the measure has been placed on the Senate calendar for consideration.
The resolution, introduced Jan. 29, would require the administration to obtain congressional authorization before undertaking new military action against Iran. It would not prevent the United States from defending itself or Israel in the event of an attack.
Kaine said recent strikes against Iran were carried out without authorization or a clear strategy, adding that the vote would show where lawmakers stand on entering a new confrontation.
Schumer described the administration’s actions as “an optional war without a plan or authorization.” Schiff said the constitutional authority to declare war rests with Congress and that the president used military force without consulting lawmakers.
The vote follows a similar attempt last June to pass a resolution blocking the use of force against Iran without congressional approval, which failed to secure enough votes despite bipartisan support.
