Final Stage of Spain’s Vuelta Cycling race suspended amid pro-Palestinians Protests

Madrid, SANA- Organizers of the Vuelta a España cycling race announced the cancellation of its final stage following pro-Palestinian demonstrations protesting the participation of an Israeli team. Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard was declared the overall winner.

Protesters dismantled metal barricades and blocked the race route at several points throughout the city, voicing opposition to the Israeli team’s inclusion amid the ongoing military offensive in Gaza. Police attempted to disperse the demonstrators.

Commenting on the events, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated: “Today marks the end of the Vuelta a España. We express our respect and admiration for the athletes, and for the Spanish people who stand up for just causes like Palestine.”

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has carried out a military campaign in Gaza that has resulted in the deaths of over 64,000 Palestinians and injured more than 164,000, according to local sources.
