Kinshasa, June 1 (SANA) Confirmed Ebola infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo have risen to 282 after 19 new cases were recorded on Monday, according to official data cited by Reuters.
Figures released by the Ministry of Communications and Media showed that 264 cases were recorded in Ituri province, 15 in North Kivu and three in South Kivu. The outbreak has resulted in 42 confirmed deaths.
The current outbreak is the country’s 17th since Ebola was first identified in 1976 and is the third-largest recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Health authorities and international agencies continue to monitor the spread of the virus amid concerns over the scale of the outbreak and the resources required to contain it.
On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the outbreak involving the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola remained active, with 906 suspected cases reported, including 223 deaths that were still under verification.
