Damascus, May 16 (SANA) Syria’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi met on Saturday with Louay al-Khatib, chairman of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), to discuss expanding cooperation on healthcare and medical education projects, including support for university hospitals.
The meeting, held in Damascus, focused on several proposed initiatives aimed at improving healthcare and training services. The projects included rehabilitating the hematology department, installing a modern catheterization unit at Al-Mouwasat University Hospital, and launching a bone marrow transplant program at the Children’s University Hospital.
The initiatives are intended to enhance the quality of medical treatment, education, and specialized healthcare services.

Al-Halabi stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation with Syrian and international medical institutions and specialists to support the development of the country’s health and education sectors, particularly in medical training and advanced treatment programs.
He said the partnership is part of broader efforts to modernize university hospitals and advance medical education and scientific research through long-term institutional cooperation.
Founded in 1998 by Syrian-American physicians, SAMS is a non-profit humanitarian organization that provides healthcare and medical education services in Syria and neighboring countries, with a focus on communities affected by humanitarian crises.
