Damascus, April 26 (SANA) Activities of Sustainable Development Week were launched at Al-Qalamoun University in Deir Attiyeh, Damascus Countryside, under the theme “Universities as a key driver in achieving sustainable development goals.”
The event highlights the role of academic institutions as active contributors to local development, with a focus on promoting volunteer work as a structured and sustainable practice within communities.
Held under the title “The University as a Local Catalyst: Institutionalizing Volunteer Work,” the program brings together students, faculty members, and community participants in a series of workshops and seminars aimed at strengthening awareness and engagement in development initiatives.
Organizers said the activities include community-based volunteering programs across several areas, such as health and awareness campaigns, training workshops, and social solidarity initiatives. These efforts also include relief and shelter support activities, as well as Ramadan initiatives such as Iftar campaigns to foster community cohesion.
The week-long event is designed to link academic knowledge with practical community service, reinforcing the role of universities in supporting sustainable development goals at the local level.
Participants said the initiative reflects growing efforts by higher education institutions in Syria to expand their social impact and contribute to long-term development priorities.
