Damascus, Aug. 9 (SANA) Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh held talks with a senior U.S. Treasury official on Sunday on efforts to reintegrate Syria into the global financial system and expand technical cooperation between the two countries.

Barnieh held the talks via videoconference with, Jonathan Burke, U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing, Syria’s Finance Ministry said on Telegram.

The talks focused on technical cooperation, capacity building and training between the Syrian Finance Ministry and the U.S. Treasury, particularly in public finance and the financial sector.

The two sides also discussed measures following the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Syria, including steps related to Washington’s decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, which the ministry said would open new opportunities for cooperation with U.S. financial institutions.

The U.S. side welcomed progress in Syria’s financial reforms and expressed support for continued efforts in the sector, according to the ministry.

Barnieh thanked the U.S. Treasury for its support for Syria’s economic recovery and stressed the importance of continued cooperation to strengthen economic stability, reintegrate the country into the global economy and promote integrity and transparency.

In July, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jacob McGee said during the first Syrian-American Business Forum in Damascus that Washington was working with the Syrian government to facilitate financial integration and provide a clear regulatory environment for trade and investment.
