Damascus, June 6 (SANA) Limestone production and exports from Damascus countryside are increasing, with officials describing the sector as one of Syria’s key mineral industries supporting construction activity and export revenues.
Data from Syria’s General Establishment of Geology and Mineral Resources show that quarries in Damascus countryside produce around 60,000 tons of cut limestone annually, primarily supplied to local construction and finishing markets, with part of the output directed to export markets.
Exports from the province are estimated at around 300,000 square meters annually, contributing to foreign currency earnings while supporting quarrying, transport, and stone-processing industries, as well as employment in production areas, according to the establishment.
Speaking to SANA, Mohammad Sheet, Director of the Damascus countryside Branch of the establishment, said demand for Syrian limestone has been rising in foreign markets due to its quality, color variety, and technical specifications, which has driven higher export volumes in recent years.
He added that the institution is working to support the sector and improve production efficiency.
Authorities are also seeking to further develop quarry operations in Damascus countryside and improve supply chains in order to boost exports and increase the added value of the stone industry, as part of broader efforts to support investment in natural resources.
