Beijing, April 16, 2026 (SANA) Traditional Aleppo laurel soap is seeing rising demand in China, according to a report by Xinhua News Agency, with the product gaining traction on e-commerce platforms and at trade exhibitions.

At an authorized store for Syrian products on JD.com, Aleppo soap ranks among top-selling items alongside rose oil, rose tea and olive oil.

Known for its olive and laurel oil ingredients, Aleppo soap dates back thousands of years and originated as a household craft before developing into a workshop-based industry in northern Syria.

The tradition was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2024.

The China International Import Expo has helped introduce the product to Chinese consumers. Trader Dong Jingyan said she first brought the soap to the inaugural 2018 expo in Shanghai, where it quickly attracted buyers and repeat orders.

Demand grew in subsequent editions, with Dong noting increased consumer awareness of Syrian products over time.

Consumers in China have also shared positive feedback online, citing the soap’s mild scent, rich lather and suitability for skin and hair care, with some purchasing it repeatedly or as gifts.
