Idlib, June 15 (SANA)    Internal Security Commander in Idlib Brig. Gen. Ghassan Bakir told SANA that security forces in northwest Syria arrested a group of remnants of the deposed regime who had been running espionage and bombing cells active during its rule.

Bakir said investigations showed that the detainees had worked as security arms for the deposed regime, monitoring and photographing military sites during the Syrian revolution and providing its warplanes and artillery units with precise coordinates to target them.

Members of the network were involved in coordinating the entry of booby-trapped cars, motorcycles and explosive devices and helping detonate them in civilian gatherings, Bakir said.

He added that the detainees confessed to being behind several bombings that targeted vital areas, including al-Malaab Roundabout, al-Saba Bahrat Roundabout, al-Arbaeen Street and al-Thalathin Street in Idlib city, as well as Jisr al-Shughur city. The attacks caused casualties and spread fear among residents, he said.

Bakir said the detainees also confessed to recruiting new agents to gather information, securing smuggling routes for people involved in previous terrorist acts, and receiving financial and logistical support and direct instructions from officers in the intelligence agencies of the deposed regime.

“We reassure our people in Idlib province that the security men are continuing their work around the clock to maintain security and stability, and they are continuing to pursue remnants of the deposed regime and dismantle their networks wherever they are found,” Bakir said.

He called on citizens to trust state institutions and cooperate with the competent authorities.

“We affirm that anyone proven to be involved in crimes affecting citizens’ security will be arrested and referred to the competent judiciary,” Bakir said.
