Damascus, SANA-The Great Mosque of Bani Umayyah in Damascus is considered the fourth most famous Islamic mosque, one of the most luxurious Islamic mosques, and one of the seven wonders of Islam in the world.

The construction of the Umayyad Mosque began in 705 AD by al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik.

The Umayyad Mosque is also distinguished by being the first mosque in which the mihrab and the apse appeared as a result of the building style that was the former Church of John the Baptist. As for its northern minaret, which is the oldest of its three minarets, it dates back to the era of al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik.

It was also used as a minaret for the city of Damascus, from which the square minaret model spread to all parts of Syria, North Africa and Andalusia.
