Ansari, de Mistura discuss prospects of political solution to the crisis in Syria

TEHRAN, SANA – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari discussed with UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura the latest developments in Syria and prospects of the political solution.

In a statement following the meeting, Jaberi Ansari stressed the need for the UN to send humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people and for effective counterterrorism efforts.

“We discussed sending humanitarian assistance to Syria, and the talks to that effect had been constructive. We also discussed latest developments on the regional and international arenas, with a focus on the humanitarian situation in Syria,” he said.

Jaberi Ansari called on the UN to live up to its reputation and maintain an unbiased stance towards developments in Syria, urging it to perform its duties for preserving international peace and stability.

“We discussed during the meeting the UN steps against using civilians as human shields by terrorists,” de Mistura said, adding “We condemn killing and crimes in Aleppo, and are currently studying our proposals about the exit of citizens and armed groups from Aleppo.”

Hundreds of families are under siege in eastern Aleppo as terrorist groups prevent the locals from exiting, opening fire at people who attempted to leave through safe corridors set up for them to head towards temporary residential centers.

Earlier, De Mistura arrived in Tehran as part of his mission in the region to coordinate efforts of bringing Syrian crisis to an end.

De Mistura is scheduled to meet senior Iranian officials to discuss possible ways out of the crisis.
