Damascus, SANA – The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) mission in Syria organized Saturday a symposium under the title of “Get Acquainted to the Refugee” on occasion of “World Refugee Day”.
Assistant Head of UNHCR Mission Ajmal Khybari said .. Syria has been so generous, having received refugees throughout decades where it provided them with shelter and free education.
Syria has closely worked with UNHCR to guarantee the safety and well-being of the refugees since 1991 and this is our chance to thank Syria, its government and people for their good hospitality throughout these years, He added.
Khybari clarified that UNHCR tries with its local partners in Syria, particularly the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), which has done a great job, to deliver humanitarian aid to all those being harmed.
He said that the aid comes to Syria is not sufficient and the international community should exert more efforts in this regard, stressing that solving the crises in the region cannot be done through providing humanitarian aid only but there should be a real political will by the international community.
On the role of UNHCR in improving the situation of the Syrian refugees who had to leave their residence due to terrorism, Khybari said that the UNHCR has a clear stance regarding refugees around the world…it supports the refugees, defends them and believes in their rights wherever they are, as it urges the hosting countries to apply the international criteria in hosting and receiving the Syrian refugees.
UNHCR was founded on 14 October, 1950 by the UN General Assembly. It seeks to protects refugees and solve their problems around the world.
