WHO:  mpox outbreak won’t be a new COVID

Geneva, SANA – The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on Tuesday that mpox, formerly called monkeypox , is not the new Covid as the coronavirus pandemic was well known and “we know how to control it and prevent its spreading.

“Mpox is not the new covid , whether it is from clade 1 strain that causes the current epidemic which has spread in Central and East Africa, or clade 2 strain of monkeypox, that led to the outbreak of the epidemic in 2022 in the world and the declaration of a state of emergency” AFP quoted WHO regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, as saying in a press conference.

For her part, Catherine Smallwood, an official at the European Office of the World Health Organization, added that what has been discovered now is a group of viral mutations that scientists have identified, which are spread exclusively among humans, denying that cases caused by clade 1b, which is transmitted through animals, have been isolated or recorded.

The WHO declared an international health emergency, concerned by the rise in cases of Clade 1b in the DR Congo and its spread to nearby countries.
