Syria demands unconditional lifting of the blockade imposed on the Syrian people

Geneva, SANA- Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Haydar Ali Ahmad, demanded the immediate, complete and unconditional lifting of the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people.

This position of the diplomat was expressed in a statement he delivered before the Human Rights Council, which dedicated its session to an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur in charge of studying the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights.

“We thank Alena Douhan,UN Special Rapporteur, for her report on her visit to Syria, and welcome her objective analysis and professional approach, which reflected the extensive consultations she carried out during the visit and her confirmation that maintaining these measures is equivalent to a crime against humanity committed against all the Syrian people,” said the Ambassador.

He affirmed that these unilateral coercive measures illegally imposed on the Syrian people constitute a violation of the human rights of the Syrian people as a whole, as they cause the death of Syrians and deprive them of their basic rights, including the right to have a decent standard of living, in addition to depriving them of their rights to health, medical care, education, work and development.

“The wide-ranging and long-term multiple regimes of unilateral coercive measures imply the deliberate intention to completely isolate the country, suffocate its economy and hinder national efforts to respond effectively to basic needs and advance the reconstruction of the country,” Ambassador Ahmad said.

He clarified that the effects of these measures refute the unrealistic and misleading justifications that the United States and the European Union have always provided and their claims that they are “targeted or intelligent” or that their effects are unintended.

According to the representative, “the first and last affected by these coercive measures imposed by the United States, the European Union and other countries are the Syrian people, especially children, women, people with disabilities, sick and the poor.”

“The immediate, complete and unconditional lifting of these measures is the only way to eliminate their disastrous effects on the human rights and humanitarian situation in the Syrian Arab Republic,” Ambassador Ahmad  concluded.
