Sweida production of almond estimated at 3,286 tons

Sweida, SANA – Almond harvesting season has begun for the current season in the warmest areas in Sweida Province, and it will expand successively to include the rest of the cultivated areas in the coming period.

 Director of Sweida Agriculture Department Ayham Hamed told SANA that the harvesting operation will continue for a month, adding that almond production for the current season is estimated at about 3,286 tons of which 2,421 are rainfed and the rest is irrigated.

Hamed noted that the current season is better than the previous one in which the production reached about 1,114 tons.

 He underlined the importance of encouraging the cultivation of almond trees in different areas across the province as they endure dryness and the environmental conditions in the province are suitable for them, and they achieve considerable revenues for farmers.

The total areas cultivated with almond trees in the province are estimated at 2,583 hectares that include 702,000 almond trees of which 543,000 are fruitful, and the majority of them are concentrated at the low plains.
