Damascus, SANA – Since ancient ages, copper metal has been strongly related to human life, as it was used in making food utensils and now in making artistic masterpieces.
In Medhat Basha Souk in Old Damascus, al-Tahhan family is still preserving its profession inherited from grandfathers-engraving on copper.
Majed al-Tahhan, thirty years old, says he has been engaged in this profession for 15 years, clarifying that he engraves different sorts of inscriptions on brass pots including writings, geometric forms, flowers and others.
“This metal is flexible and there are two sorts of it: brass and copper. Almost every house possesses copper masterpieces here in Damascus. It is part of our culture,” he added.
“Although it is an arduous profession, it is interesting. Engraving on copper requires patients, accuracy and skillfulness and we, the al-Tahhan family members, are eager to continue working in this profession,” Majes concludes.
